World University Rankings 2010-2011
Emails with Phil Baty, deputy editor responsible for all of Times Higher Education’s international coverage, including the annual World University Rankings. 23 September 2010 To: Phil Baty Subject: On Global Impact & Uni Rankings Dear Phil, Many thanks for the awesome and amusing article Global Impact: Revamped rankings cause elation and consternation http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=413604 Last year’s rankings, http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/Rankings2009-Top200.html, showed from the entire Middle East only Israel had 3 universities among the top 200. This year only Egypt was able to be among the winners with only one university, Alexandria University, ranked 147. Could 12 months do such massive and dramatic change on a very slow responding environment? Is there something wrong somewhere? Could it be rankings in the past was fairly unreliable, which leads me to say if so then next year’s rankings may prove this year’s suffering similar weakness? Of course, we can not compare 2009 results with 2010 results, as 2010 used an entire new and very different methodology. A problem with the new tables is that not every university provided us with their data and signed it off as correct, and this is the reason that some significant Israeli institutions have not been included in 2010.
